Mercedes-Benz Logo Explained

Urbandale Mercedes-Benz drivers often ask the team at Mercedes-Benz of Des Moines about the Mercedes-Benz logo. Before you learn more about the Mercedes-Benz logo meaning though, let’s travel back in time to 1890, when Gottlieb Daimler created the luxury auto company, called Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft, or DMG. Later, that same year, the company was handed over to Wilhelm Maybach and Emil Jellinek, but Daimler’s two sons, Paul and Adolf, stayed heavily involved in the company.

Paul and Adolf came up with the Mercedes-Benz logo in 1909, when they recalled a postcard sent by their father in 1872 that had marked the location of their home with a 3-pointed star. Not long after that, in the same year, DMG declared the Mercedes-Benz 3-pointed star as their now-iconic emblem, proudly displaying it on each and every one of the vehicles they made.

During the first 15 years of the Mercedes-Benz logo, the emblem was blue. It wasn’t until 1926 that it underwent its first revision and a laurel border was added around the outside. In 1934, the  Mercedes-Benz 3-pointed star was changed to silver.

What Is the Mercedes-Benz Logo Meaning?

Today, the Mercedes-Benz logo serves as a proud symbol of the company’s rich heritage, originating with one man with a dream to engineer some of the best performance vehicles in the world.

Ankeny customers sometimes wonder if the Mercedes-Benz logo meaning is merely a reflection of the Daimler sons’ devotion to their father, or is there more to it? According to Mercedes-Benz officials the Mercedes-Benz 3-pointed star is meant to symbolize the luxury brand’s ambition for universal motorization. Each point of the Mercedes-Benz 3-pointed star represents an aspect of the environment:

  • Land
  • Sea
  • Air

The Daimler brothers believed that DMG would one day develop luxury transportation for all three.

What Is the Mercedes-Benz AMG® Logo?

If you’ve ever looked long and hard at the Mercedes-Benz AMG® logo, you may have noticed it’s a bit more detailed than the traditional Mercedes-Benz 3-pointed star. Interesting as it may be to entertain the idea of the Mercedes-Benz AMG® logo being a secret map or some sort of cryptic symbol, the truth is not so mysterious:

  • The right portion of the Mercedes-Benz AMG® logo is a cam, valve, and valve spring, which are three vital engine components. They symbolize the fervor for engineering that is put into every Mercedes-Benz AMG® powerhouse.
  • The left side of the Mercedes-Benz AMG® logo is more visually exciting: an apple tree perched beside a river. But it isn’t just some randomly chosen, tranquil scene. Rather, it is the historic coat of arms of the town of Affalterbach, Germany, where the Mercedes-Benz AMG® headquarters now resides.
