What are the EV Charging Levels?

You have a choice of three EV charging levels. Level 1 is the slowest, while Level 3 offers the speediest charging rates. Here is a brief overview of the available EV charging types:

  • Level 1 – For Level 1 charging, you will need a charging cord with a standard plug-in and a J1772 connector. These systems are ideal for residential use because they utilize a standard 120-volt household outlet. Anticipate around 24 hours or more to fully charge your EV battery.
  • Level 2 – You can find Level 2 charging systems at public stations, or you can have one installed by a professional in your home. This EV charging type requires a 240-volt outlet and a J1772 connector. It generally takes about 4 to 10 hours to recoup an 80% charge.
  • Level 3/DC Fast Charging – This EV charging type is available at select public stations around West Des Moines and beyond. You will enjoy lightning-fast charging speeds—just 30 minutes to one hour for an 80% charge. Keep in mind that most non-Tesla fast chargers use SAE Combined Charging System connectors.
